‘Is It Ideal? Eh’: General Hospital’s Steve Burton Sounds Off On Jason’s Exit and the Development That’s ‘Going to Be a Problem’ Where His Return Is Concerned

Nearly a month after Steve Burton exited stage left from General Hospital to spend some quality time with his new bride and their family — watch him get schooled by his mother-in-law — the Daytime Emmy Award winner is opening up about the way that on-screen counterpart Jason was disappeared from the canvas.
That’s a Wrap
The erstwhile Stone Cold was supposed to go on the lam with lovergirl Britt until her life-saving meds could be reverse-engineered (thereby getting her out from under Sidwell and Cullum’s thumbs). “They had to write something,” Burton says in the new episode of his and Bradford Anderson’s That’s Awesome! podcast (which you can watch below). “Is it ideal? Eh… You’re leaving your kid.”
A singularly impressionable one at that!
Stone Cold, Meet… Little Rock?
When Jason wound up instead being arrested by the WSB for shooting Cullum — young Rocco actually pulled the trigger to protect the hitman and Britt — it set son Danny down a path that could turn him into Jason 2.0. “If there was a next generation of” JV mobsters, Burton says, “I think it’d be good for storytelling. But it would have to be told differently… different players, different motives.”
The black-T-shirt-and-leather-jacket combo, though, is probably nonnegotiable.
That’s Gonna Be Some Homecoming
Burton is expected to return to General Hospital this summer, at which point Jason will be faced with a whole new issue: bestie Sonny’s questionable reliance on his treacherous half brother. “I’m not sure if Ric has reformed at all,” Burton says in character. (Jason has always disliked Ric as much as Burton likes Rick Hearst!) So “when I come back, it’s going to be a problem like it used to be in the old days. That’s pretty cool.”
