“Shocking Behind-the-Scenes Reveal: Co-Star Says Todd Meadows’ Death Was Filmed”
The tragic death of Todd Meadows, a 25-year-old deckhand featured on Deadliest Catch, was captured on camera, according to his bunkmate and fellow cast member Trey John Green III.
Meadows fell overboard from the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady while crabbing in the Bering Sea on February 25, 2026.
The incident is currently under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard. He was working aboard the 125-foot commercial fishing vessel, which has appeared on the Discovery Channel’s long-running reality series.
Green confirmed to Us Weekly that the incident was filmed as part of Season 22 production.
“Discovery is done filming, but there was a producer and a deck cam guy on the boat for the past two months filming for season 22 of the show. It was filmed, unfortunately,” Green said. “There is a deck cam as well that records 24/7, everything, and it caught everything from the incident as well.”
Green described the effort to save Meadows as heartbreaking. “Unfortunately, it ended in tragedy,” he said, adding that the crew “did everything we could to save him.” He noted that rescue attempts at sea are “no easy task” and called Meadows an “amazing human.”
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, watchstanders at the Arctic District command center in Juneau received notification from the Aleutian Lady at approximately 5:05 p.m. local time that Meadows had fallen overboard about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor. He was recovered by the crew roughly ten minutes later but was unresponsive. First aid and resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Meadows’ body was transported to Dutch Harbor and later received by the Anchorage Medical Examiner’s Office on February 27. An autopsy was performed, and his body was released on March 2.
The Coast Guard confirmed it is investigating the incident, stating that it examines marine casualties to determine causes and implement corrective safety measures.
Cast and Network React to Devastating Loss
Captain Rick Shelford, owner of the Aleutian Lady, announced Meadows’ passing in an emotional Facebook tribute, calling it “the most tragic day in the history” of the vessel.
Shelford described Meadows as the newest crew member who quickly became part of the boat’s tight-knit family. “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always,” Shelford wrote.
He added that Meadows was devoted to his three young sons. “Todd’s love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him.”
The Discovery Channel also released a statement expressing its condolences. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Green said the crew is temporarily returning home to mourn but plans to resume filming after a short break. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe organized by Paige Knutson has been established to support Meadows’ three sons and assist with funeral expenses.
Though his time aboard the Aleutian Lady was brief, those who worked alongside him say his impact was lasting. As Captain Shelford wrote in his tribute, “Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood.”
Season 22 of Deadliest Catch has completed filming, though it remains unclear how the network will handle the footage of the tragic incident.
