Phyllis was already a firm front-runner for town pariah, and the upcoming twist Young & Restless just teased is only gonna make things worse… so much worse that we almost can’t believe they’re going there. Yet, Michelle Stafford has all but confirmed it!

In Thursday’s recap, after consecutive run-ins with Nick, Billy and Cane, who told her he would never forgive her for landing him in the jam that was all his big idea to begin with, Phyllis was ready for a martini (or was it a Vesper). Anyway, we weren’t quite ready for what happened next.

None other than the notorious Matt Clark, currently suffering from amnesia, was posted up at the Club bar. He’d hoped the bartender would recognize him, but that didn’t pan out, and the tried, and failed, to chat up a crusty Cane. Still having no idea who he was, or how lucky he was to have not crossed paths with anyone who did know him, Clark entertained himself by watching/listening to Ashby rant about someone named ‘Victor’.

When Phyllis showed up, the drama ramped up considerably, as the Club owner confronted the redhead, hissing and spitting about her being poison. Matt took it all in, including Phyllis’ notably unruffled feathers, and gazed upon her looking just like that emoji with the hearts for eyes. No, really. It appeared to be love at first sight as he openly admired her “main character energy”.

We have to admit we were surprised Phyllis didn’t recognize him. Given her history with Nick you’d have thought she would have, but there we were by episode’s end, contemplating the possibility of Phyllis and Matt getting together somehow. Except… the cliffhanger was Nick walking in, seemingly to break up the party.

But, if our hunch is correct, Nick will take one look at Phyllis, decide he’s too disgusted to deal with her, and walk right back out without ever realizing presumed-dead Matt Clark was mere feet away. Which would leave Phyllis and Matt in the clear for an off-the-wall plot twist that could only be characterized as “double-trouble.”

What’s more, in a new Instagram post, Michelle Stafford seems to further confirm our theory, by revealing that Roger Howarth is still gracing the hair and make-up room, meaning there’s at least a few weeks more of Matt Clark, and teasing, “Many things to come.” Check it out:

Whether it’s a love match or merely a dastardly duo, we can’t wait to see what Phyllis and Matt get up to on Young & Restless. Double the trouble is always better on a soap!
