As the Wrong Person Is Crowned Platinum Deb, [Spoiler] Dies On the Operating Table
Upon opening the envelope containing the name of the Platinum Deb, Deanna assumes it must be a mistake. She tries to get clarity, but an eavesdropping Anastasia hear that it is Francesca and announces it to the room. “Oh, hell no!” says a fired-up Dani even as Anastasia grabs the sash and shoves the tiara onto her grandchild’s head. Sure enough, it turns out a drunk Nathan switched the cards. Despite all Anastasia’s protests, Samantha is named the true Platinum Deb, leading to Francesca herself placing the sash and tiara upon her rival.
Jessica and Tyrell Make Love
Jessica and Tyrell are at her dad’s beach house, intending to make love for the first time. Both are nervous, but agree to take it step-by-step. After making love, Tyrell can’t help but worry about what will happen to them when they go to separate colleges. Back at the cotillion, her parents are furious that Martin didn’t notify them as soon as he noticed Jessica and Tyrell were missing. Vanessa is thrilled to have both her children in attendance, at least until Deanna goes off upon finding out Donnell is wearing Joey’s cufflinks.
Derek Dies!
It turns out that Jacob was not shot, but passed out after hitting his head. Derek, however, was not so lucky. He is rushed to the hospital, Ashley’s name on his lips. Lia claims to be having chest pains and is also taken to the hospital, while Elon tells Grayson he’ll find out who leaked what was going down. Joey, tipped off by Randy what went down, calls Vanessa, saying she should send Naomi to the hospital, pronto, and she reunites with her husband.
Derek is taken to the hospital, where he tells Ashley not to be scared just before being wheeled into the operating room. When Lia is brought in, saying her shoulder was grazed by a bullet, Ashley tries to attack her. Lia goes for treatment, and Grayson tries explaining to Ashley everything that happened. Vanessa shows up at Joey’s, demanding to know how involved he was in the night’s activities. Joey says that while tonight had nothing to do with his businesses, the next time might, and it’s always possible they can go terribly wrong. And at that moment, Ashley realizes that Derek’s surgeon is delivering bad news to Shanice, who — in a gorgeously directed, slow-motion, dialogue-free moment — informs those gathered that Derek didn’t survive.
