Hollywood has lost a true legend. Gerald Dwight “Wings” Hauser passed away on March 15 in Los Angeles at the age of 77, leaving behind a remarkable legacy forged over 58 years across film, television, and music.

Born into an artistic family — son of Academy Award-winning writer/director Dwight A. Hauser and talented mother Geraldine T. Hauser — Wings’ path into the entertainment world seemed destined. Yet the sheer volume and variety of his work made his career nothing short of extraordinary.

He first stepped before the camera at age 18 with a small role in the 1967 war film First to Fight. Over the decades, Hauser became a compelling character actor, working tirelessly with over 100 film and TV credits to his name. He captured attention notably with his role as Greg Foster on the long-running CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, a role he inhabited from 1977 to 1981, then reprised briefly in 2010.

Hauser also made a lasting impression in the cult 1982 thriller Vice Squad, playing the ruthless pimp Ramrod — a villainous character that cemented his status as a powerhouse on screen. Not only did he act, but he also wrote and performed the film’s theme song, “Neon Slime,” showcasing his many artistic talents.

Critics acknowledged his range with an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Male for his role in Tough Guys Don’t Dance (1987). His television credits extended to fan favorites like Beverly Hills, 90210, Murder, She Wrote, Roseanne, Walker, Texas Ranger and more.

Wings Hauser was more than an actor; he was a relentless creative force — also a writer, director, and musician. His wife Cali Lili Hauser confirmed that Wings passed away peacefully at their studio, in her arms, surrounded by their shared artistry. She shared a heartfelt message calling on fans to support their ongoing film and music projects, honoring Wings’ living legacy through sustainable indie creativity and their sanctuary for sea life and butterflies.

His family, including his son Cole Hauser — an acclaimed actor known for Yellowstone and Good Will Hunting — continue to carry his torch in the industry.

Wings Hauser’s career was defined by his unyielding dedication and unique presence, often described as “the biggest star you’ve never heard of.” As we say goodbye, the question remains: which of his iconic roles will live longest in your memory?
