Did Young & Restless Send [Spoiler] to Beyond the Gates Just to Kill ’Em Off?!?

When The Young and the Restless’ Peter Bergman (Jack) said that Beyond the Gates was staging “the biggest natural disaster event I’ve ever seen on a soap,” he was right. When CBS announced that several Genoa City residents would be heading to Fairmont Crest, we got excited. When it was revealed that a tornado would rock Martin’s fundraiser, that only ramped up our anticipating… even as we began to fear for those making the journey.

Jack and Diane politely endure Tomas' pitch in the country club ballroom.

After all, when soaps stage big, splashy, danger-filled events, it very often leads to one or more of the characters involved being killed off. And at the end of the episode which aired on Thursday, June 11 — a recap of which you can read here — several lives were left hanging in the balance.

But did The Young and the Restless really send someone not only to Fairmont Crest but to their grave, too?

The episode left several characters from each soap in potentially mortal jeopardy. Even as Eva and Kat seemed on the verge of being rescued, Leslie’s daughter was coughing up blood and seemed to fall unconscious. Then there was Martin, whose political campaign was at the heart of the fundraiser, who seemed to be fighting for his life after being crushed by a tree which had crashed through a window during the tornado.

They, however, were not the ones we most worried about. Instead, it was two Genoa City ladies who appeared to be in the biggest danger. Why? Because a chandelier, which viewers had been watching wobble precariously the entire hour, chose the closing moments to plunge down into the ballroom. Worse, it seemed to be heading squarely for the head of Abby! Seeing the danger, Diane appeared poised to dash across the room, which might easily result in her saving Abby’s life only to see her own light snuffed out!

Young & Restless fans know that on that soap, Diane has been missing for a while now. And while her dying in Fairmont Crest would explain that, newly-released news about where Diane has been — and with whom — both clears matters up and makes them more confusing. Why? Because the timeline of the two shows don’t actual match up thanks to a lack of synchronicity between their plots. Diane is missing on Young & Restless and yet partying it up on Beyond the Gates!

Which leads us to believe that if someone is going to bite the proverbial bullet, it will wind up being Abby. In many ways, this would make sense. Portrayer Melissa Ordway was bumped from contract to recurring some time ago. Plus, killing Abby would free up Devon for an eventual new love interest. Heck, it has not gone unnoticed by fans that Devon has thrown sparks with Beyond the Gates’ Dani during his visits to the DMV.

Of course, the episode also left the fate of Victor Newman up in the air, as he had not yet been located. But if there’s one thing of which we’re absolutely sure, it’s that it would take much more than a mere tornado to kill off The Great Victor Newman!
