Wait, General Hospital’s Ethan Just Did *What*?!

It’s not often we’re left confused watching a soap, but we’ll admit to being more than a little mystified after watching General Hospital‘s Wednesday episode! And it all revolves around Ethan. And honestly, that seems about right for a member of the Spencer family. How could he be one of Luke’s kids without a little mystery?

In any case, in the episode, Ethan went to Liz to give a voluntary DNA sample for… reasons he didn’t disclose. He just promised her that this wouldn’t hurt anyone and she let him know he has the right to privacy. Except, he ultimately volunteered someone else’s DNA. Because as soon as Liz left the room, Ethan swapped his sample with another sample that he seemed to have lifted from the PCPD evidence room, per a handy flashback.

All of this seemed to come out of nowhere, and it’s got us wondering what the heck is going on! The immediate fan reaction seems to be that this confirms that Ethan isn’t Phoebe’s dad after all. Maybe so.

Maybe Phoebe’s real dad is someone dangerous who’s had a run-in with the Port Charles police. Ethan wants to keep up the ruse that he’s the father, so he’s doing a DNA test under his name and using the real father’s DNA to whip out as evidence that he’s Phoebe’s daddy. That would keep the tot safe from whatever baddie is the real father.

But there’s also the possibility that he wants Alexis to stop hounding him about the closed adoption, and doesn’t want to risk Chase and Brook Lynn finding out he’s the father. Ethan runs this DNA test under his name, then he can use it to show he’s got nothing to do with the baby!

If we had to pick a theory, we’re leaning a bit more towards the first one. But that just leads us to the horrifying question of: What villain from the PCPD’s past is Phoebe’s father?

What are your thoughts? What did Ethan just do with the DNA switch, and what does it mean?
