Stefano’s Memorial Gives Us More Questions Than Answers as The Phoenix’s Enemies and Loved Ones Say Goodbye

It’s the big memorial day and Theo’s stunned to see Abe is going to the memorial, and he asks him not to. He can’t mourn if Abe’s celebrating.
Meanwhile, just before they leave for the memorial, Chanel tells Johnny that she and Trey won’t be going with him. She lost sleep worrying about going, so she won’t. That’s A-OK with Johnny.
Paulina shows up to find that Chanel isn’t going. She’s exhausted and can’t wait until Theo goes back to work and Johnny’s home more. Paulina waxes on about the joys of pregnancy, then they get to the inevitability of EJ finding out.
Kate’s Annoyed With Roman
In the Pub, Roman tells Marlena that no one would blame her if she wanted to bail, but she’s going. He insists that Marlena will never be alone and they hug, while Kate watches, very much getting fed up. She decides she needs to go — By herself. Now. — and walks out.
Steve and Kayla, who had been outside watching Kate sweep by, head in and now that Marlena has company, Roman follows his wife to check on her.
Can the DiMeras Play Nice?
Chad and Kristen are the first two to join EJ in the mansion. She takes great joy in telling EJ Rafe was looking for him — and she hopes the agent locks him right up. Chad steps in and tells them to knock it off. The only way to get through this memorial is as a family!
EJ and Kristen stop yelling, but keep right on annoying each other until Kristen tells her brothers that Stefan is definitely dead. (Or not.) Tony and Anna are back for the memorial from another cruise, apparently having jetted off the second he was free from the crypt.
Then Theo joins them all as Tony and Anna discuss the urn. She would’ve chosen black and gold with a phoenix. She’s just glad she isn’t carrying Tony’s urn around anymore, since he wasn’t in it. (Is Stefano in his?)
Has EJ Made Things Worse With Johnny?
Johnny and Kate both arrive and she hangs out in the foyer for a bit until Chad joins her for a hug. Johnny chats with Theo about running DiMera, as if Theo had been running it for years and is the expert. EJ watches them both from the background.
Roman finally gets to the mansion to apologize to Kate for being insensitive and not thinking of what she’s going through. He promises she’ll never have to manage on her own as long as he’s around, so, bolstered, she heads in to talk to Stefano, telling him that she’s looking to the future, instead of the past. She’s undercutting Johnny, it turns out, to make Roman happy and get him out of DiMera. Also, she’s loyal to Titan now.
Johnny takes her place to say hi to Nonno and share the news of his great-grandchildren. EJ watches from the background again as Johnny says he misses his grandfather. That done, Johnny goes to leave, but not before EJ tells him he heard him tell his grandfather that Chanel’s pregnant. He’s thrilled that this time, Chanel’s baby is a DiMera, and that ticks Johnny the hell off. Stefano never made a distinction between EJ and Kristen. He storms out, telling EJ to stay the hell away from them.
Stefano’s Enemies Say Goodbye
Marlena and the Johnsons show up, so Kayla and Steve visit Stefano’s ashes next, where she tempts fate by saying that this time, it’s final. There’s no coming back. Steve thinks back to his “Stevano” days and Kayla promises they’re done being haunted by him.
Roman doesn’t even bother playing nice at the urn. He’s just hoping it’s hot in there. Despite everything Stefano did to him, he’s doing just fine. Their grandchildren are doing just fine, and Roman gets to watch them grow up. So he wins. Stefano loses.
In the Show’s Final Moments
Johnny gets home and says things went as well as they could — but EJ found out Chanel’s pregnant by spying on him.
It’s just the DiMeras left, as EJ insists that they will honor Stefano’s legacy and continue it. “The house of DiMera will not fall.” But then Kristen peels off and storms out past the non-DiMeras still in the foyer. So… that didn’t last.
Marlena, it turns out, still has to say a few things. Everyone’s gone to lunch while she lets Stefano know just how gross his obsession was. It wasn’t even over her — but his fantasy of her. He took so much from her, but he’s the reason she found John. “I hope you rest in peace,” she practically spits out. “That way, we will never have to see you again. I’m not sure we get that lucky. Lucky enough to have you gone forever.”
The candles blow out and Marlena jumps.
